Yamaha YSP-900SW Quick Review

Yamaha’s YSP is part of a series of digital sound projectors designed to offer an all-in-one surround sound solution. Various models in the range are optimised for use with specific sized televisions, the YSP-900 on test is ideal for 32-inch screens, but in reality you’ll still benefit from the unit’s capabilities even if you’re not using the most favourable size.

Upside
The most obvious upside to investing in a sound projector is the simplicity of the form factor. With just one slimline unit (with a built-in digital amplifier) to install instead of a family of speakers, you won't have to worry about cluttering up your lounge room, calibrating multiple components or tripping over wires. The projectors have been designed to complement shiny new TVs, with the measurements of the YSP-900SW and YSP-1100B/SSW corresponding to 32-inch and 42-inch flatscreen models. So if you've just spent up big on a piece of plasma perfection, you need not worry about the designs clashing. Read full review...

Planar PD8150 DLP Projector

By: Thomas J. Norton, UltimateAVmag.com, June 2008

Although Planar has a significant presence in the video-display business, it's relatively new to the home-theater market. The company first popped up a couple of years ago at a major trade show with some intriguing prototypes. Since then, it has expanded its home-theater resume by acquiring Runco and Vidikron, and all three brands maintain their separate identities under the Planar umbrella.

The Planar brand is aimed at more budget-conscious home-theater consumers. As the company's top-of-the-line projector, I would hardly call the $8000 PD8150 "budget," but both Runco and Vidikron offer far more pricey products. Those upmarket nameplates are most often found in custom installations, while Planar's market includes the buy-it, unpack-it, and install-it-yourself crowd—which, I suspect, describes many of UAV's readers.

Features

The PD8150 certainly sports an eye-catching design, with its smoothly rounded, glossy black case. A matching, detachable cover retains the shapely look while concealing the input panel and cables at the back.

The standard zoom lens has a relatively long throw (see Specifications), but a shorter-throw lens is available as a $799 option. Both focus and zoom are manual, as are vertical and horizontal lens shift. Read the full article...

Big Screens, Small Prices

By: Adrienne Maxwell, Hometheater

A new crop of entry-level projectors makes big-screen 1080p more affordable than ever. There’s been a lot of fuss over the rapid drop in price of big-screen flat panels, but that ain’t nothing compared with the free-falling MSRPs you’ll find over in the 1080p projection realm. Two years ago, the going rate for one of the first 1080p projectors was about $10,000. Last year, we saw a number of high-quality offerings around the $5,000 mark.

This year, companies like Optoma, Sanyo, and Mitsubishi have released 1080p projectors priced under $4,000. These entry-level models feature a nice complement of advanced image-adjustment options and all of the desired video inputs: HDMI 1.3, PC, and component video. But the important question is, how does their performance measure up with pricier competition? You’ll have to read on to find out. Read the full articles...

PS3 to get dynamic in-game adds

By: Scott Nichols, PCWorld, 05/06/2008

Madison Avenue's inroads into the virtual world have just been extended. Sony says it will now start running ads in PlayStation 3 games.

Sony has reached an agreement with marketing firm IGA Worldwide to provide dynamic in-game ads for the PlayStation 3. Shortly after the announcement, IGA Worldwide announced a deal making IGA Worldwide the exclusive ad provider for PS3 games developed and published by industry giant EA.

Games most likely to be effected by this deal are EA Sports games as well as racing games like Need for Speed and Burnout. The move by Sony is most likely to counteract Microsoft's buy out of advertising firm Massive and then creating a similar exclusive deal providing advertising for Xbox 360 games. Samsung FP-T5084 Plasma HDTV

The Samsung FP-T5084 offers pleasing colors and sharp picture detail in a sleekly designed cabinet. Moreover, this 50-inch plasma HDTV has an extremely affordable price ($2400), which helped it capture the Best Buy in our chart of 50- and 52-inch HDTV sets.

Colors in high-definition scenes were luxuriously rich. An HD scene of The George Lopez Show revealed bright, natural colors and realistic skin tones. Jurors watching Corpse Bride, a colorfully macabre animated film, gave the FP-T5084 a high score for the vivid tones and detail that it reproduced. Standard-definition quality was slightly above average; a standard-definition baseball game had well-saturated oranges and turf greens, with fine detail in dark areas and minimal pixelation. A&H Zed mixers

Allen & Heath has made two additions to the Zed range of small-format USB mixers for live performance, recording and production. The Zed-12FX (with six mono/three dual stereo channels) and Zed-22FX (16 mono/three dual stereo channels) retain the same feature set as other models in the range but benefit from the addition of a comprehensive section of in-house designed effects. These are divided into four types — tap-tempo delays, short reverbs, long reverbs and modulation — and are controlled by three buttons for easy navigation and editing, allowing the parameters of each effect to be ‘dialled in’.

The new mixers have a responsive three-band swept-mid EQ on the mono channels, with a two-band EQ on the stereo channels, 100mm long-throw faders, four aux sends (two pre, two post fade), a USB send and return (for PC or Mac recording or playback), a dual stereo input capability and advanced monitoring facilities.
